Praying through the Word!

by Joseph Jones

In your heart can you say that you are
longing for a deeper, closer relationship
with the Lord? One of the ways I have
found that has helped me is learning to
pray through His Word back to Him.
I start by personalizing the Word.
As an example: Take Psalm 28:6
Where it says, ‘Blessed be the LORD,
Because He has heard the voice of my
supplications!’ Personalize it to
something like, Blessed are You LORD,
because You have heard my
supplications, You have heard my voice
crying out to You.
Verse 7 goes on to say, “The LORD
is my strength and my shield; My heart
trusted in Him, and I am helped;
Therefore my heart greatly rejoices, And
with my song I will praise Him.
Then personalize this to something
like, ‘‘O’ Lord You are my Strength and
You are my protector, and you are a
Shield to me that even the enemy
cannot penetrate. My heart trusts in You,
My heart relies on You, and I confidently
lean on You, and You help me; therefore
my heart greatly rejoices, and with my
song I will praise You.’
In your personalizing it make it a
prayer back to the Lord. I’m confident
He loves to hear His Word prayed by to
Him in a personal way.
I hope this helps you as you
strive to fill that longing in your heart to be closer to the Lord in 2025.

Psalm61:1-4
1 O Abba, Father, listen to my cry! See my tears, hear my
groaning, hear my prayer O Lord! Please listen to my
heart’s cry. I am crying out to you Father… 2 From the
ends of the earth, yes from one end to the other… I have
cried out to you Abba, Father, Yes, I cry to you for help
because my heart is overwhelmed. My heart is heavy…
O Father, Lead me to the towering rock of safety, where I
will be secure and feel safe 3 for you are my safe refuge,
You are a fortress where my enemies cannot reach me. 4
O Father, Let me live forever in your sanctuary, safe
beneath the shelter of your wings! O Abba, Father, lead
me to Your towering rock of safety where I will be secure
in You, where You will be a fortress to keep me safe from the enemy.

  1. I just did this with psalm 91, committing it to memory, and it has been a game changer to make it personal.
